Holy Week 2019
The public is warmly welcomed to Mittineague Congregational Church, UCC, for services of worship offered during Holy Week. Palm or Passion Sunday Service, on April 14th at 10:00 AM, includes a story that combines the triumphal spirit of Palm Sunday with the sadness of the passion of Christ, as told through music and scripture. Palms will be distributed to all in attendance following worship.
On Maundy Thursday evening, April 18th, a service of Holy Communion and Tenebrae will be held in the church sanctuary at 7:30 PM. The Office of Tenebrae dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries and is characterized by the extinguishing of candles and the reading of scripture, telling the story of the falling away of the disciples before Jesus’ crucifixion. A service of devotional significance, Tenebrae is a contemplative and meditative experience.
On Easter Sunday morning, April 21st, an abbreviated Sunrise Service will be held at 6:00 AM at the front of the church, under the guidance of Lauri Osip, Director of Christian Education. (The service will be moved indoors if inclement weather.) The service will include Easter scripture, stories, and music. Following the Sunrise Service, a continental-style, free-will-offering breakfast will take place in King Fellowship Hall.
Traditional Easter worship, on April 21st at 10:00 AM in the sanctuary, led by Rev. Bart Cochran, features a joyous Service of the Resurrection with prayers, scripture, and Easter hymns and anthems sung by the congregation and Church Choir. For this special service, we encourage worshippers to bring a cut flower with them to help turn a plain wooden cross into a flowering cross, which remains a centerpiece for worship and reflection. Children will be in church to participate in the opening part of the service, then will be invited to an Easter Egg Hunt on the grounds of the church. Children ages 3 thru Grade 6 are welcome to participate. A time to visit with family and friends will follow worship in King Fellowship Hall. An Easter celebration cake, along with other baked goodies and beverages, will be offered.
